A £7,000 crowdfunding appeal has been launched to pay for the second Bridport Mind Fest, an independent festival founded and run by people in the area.
One in four adults and one in ten children are likely to have a mental health problem in any given year. This has a profound impact on the lives of tens of millions of people in the UK, affecting relationships, work, or a person’s ability just to get through the day.
On the Crowdfunder page, organisers say: “The population of Bridport is 13,000 – that’s 3,250 people who may be suffering from a mental health problem. No-one should suffer alone, and no-one should feel ashamed.
“Bridport is a unique community of people, and we want to make sure we are a community that looks out for one another, a community that is well informed and unashamed to talk about mental health.”
“We see the festival as a way of confronting the stigma and discrimination faced by people with mental ill health, and by celebrating the power of the mind. Through talks, performances and workshops we are providing places of support and connectedness, where we can learn from each other’s experiences and build strong new relationships together.
“We want to raise awareness of mental health, give local people a chance to express themselves with engaging workshops, to enjoy film screenings, discussions, guest speakers, performances, yoga, and much more!”
Headline speakers include journalist and agony aunt Bel Mooney and BBC Street Dr Jonty Heaversedge.
Over the six-day festival, which starts on Friday 5 October 5th, there will be a wide range of events such as art exhibitions, special events with the museum and all sorts of accessible drop-ins and pop-ups all across Bridport for all ages and interests, all with the aim of supporting and celebrating mental well-being.
