Dr Who and Broadchurch actress Jodie Whittaker was among the stars representing the Time’s Up movement at the BAFTAs to protest against sexual harassment and inequality.
With her was Tracey Parsons from the Dorset Rape Crisis Centre, with whom she worked on the last series of Broadchurch. Jodie played a rape counsellor.
Her Broadchurch colleague Julie Hesmondhalgh gave a powerful performance as rape survivor Trish Winterman in Broadchurch‘s final series. Julie was nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category of the BAFTA TV Awards, which went to Vanessa Kirby who plays Princess Margaret in the Netflix drama, The Crown.
Julie told DigitalSpy that the series, which was set in West Bay, was making an important point about sexual violence by casting her as the victim, as it’s so often portrayed gratuitously or as an act of desire – and through the eyes of the perpetrator, rather than the survivor.
